Merchants of Paradise

I started by listening to each piece on the Warchild Secret 7" website, and as they played, I sketched what I saw in my mind's eye. From this I thought a few designs had potential, but I only had limited time before the deadline so I just had to go with my gut.

I selected two designs to mock up: "Merchants of Paradise" and "Be More Kind".

Beginnings

"Be More Kind" ran into teething issues at the next stage, whereas the process was much more fluid with "Merchants of Paradise".

Two designs

I sketched the design in pencil first, then photocopied it once I was happy. I went over the photocopy in pen, and then scanned it in to vectorise in Illustrator. I then coloured it in illustrator to match what I had in mind.

For this piece, the first thing that stood out to me as I listened was how the timbre of the instrumentation made me feel like I was underwater, with waves lapping above me.

As the piece went on, I imagined the colossal hand of those in power, the "merchants of paradise" holding their utopia aloft, with its shining lights and impressive skyscrapers where "[they] sell what [they] will". Behind some biblical storm clouds, the sunset is just visible, watching, as above it rise two birds as symbols of a distant "free[dom]".
