Blood Moon Rising

This was another cover art that I made using a combination of free iphone apps, such as Rookie Cam.

Gothic

I started by colouring a picture of the moon red and collecting some gothic, copyright-free photos of forests, mountains and castles with an eye to the kind of compositions that I could work with. Using the overlay function, I created an image that set the kind of scene that I saw in my mind.

Beginnings

I wanted to frame this gothic setting through the silhoutte of a wolf, so I tried a few different wolf images, putting some of them into negative or black and white to get my silhouette. The aim was to create the effect of seeing this world through the wolf's perspective. I eventually settled on one where the eyes of the wolf lined up with the blood moon in a way that evoked the sense of being watched (from the shadows).

Wolf

While the composition was on the right track, the snowy background was made up of unnecessary information, that actually took away from the artwork's impact. So, I searched for images of smoke for its mysterious connotations (as smoke both obscures and reveals).

When I overlaid it, I got an effect of the wolf emerging from the smoke, itself a portal to the gothic world.

Smoke

Finally, to glue all the elements together, I put a slight red filter on everything to make it all coherent. I also wanted to evoke blood, and heighten the gothic feel, making the sky also slightly red and the smoke appear more supernatural.
